Thomas is eight. His dad is in jail and his
mom is raising two younger sisters and Thomas
by herself. He struggles at school and has trouble
forming friendships. He is also on antidepressants.
Thomas comes to Wildwood Hills Ranch with two
days worth of tattered clothing for five days
of camp.
Thomas keeps to himself the first day of camp.
He has never been hiking, gone fishing or ridden
a horse.
By day three of camp, the change in Thomas
is amazing. He is given the nickname Smiley
because of his infectious grin. He wins a medal
in swimming and completes his first trail ride
through the hills.
Thomas self-confidence goes up several
notches and he carries his Wildwood Memory Book
everywhere. His counselors and new friends have
written many messages to Thomas.
By the end of his week at Wildwood Hills Ranch,
Thomas has discovered the joy of being part
of a team and the thrill of stretching to try
new things. He has gained self-confidence, made
new friends and is beginning to understand he
has much to offer the world he lives in. And
for the first time, he sees a future offering
hope and promise.
