Wildwood Hills Ranch Summer Camps
Frederick Douglas once said, “It is better to build strong children than repair broken men.” Wildwood Hills Ranch works to build strong positive leaders with each youth that participates in one of our leadership programs. We focus on strengthening character and leadership development in all areas of camp- horses, team building, art and aquatics. With each program the youth are involved, they learn, apply and debrief the specific skills we are working to develop.
CHARACTER COUNTS! In Iowa is a project of the Institute for Character Development (ICD) at Drake University. Their Mission is to recognize, enhance and sustain the positive qualities of Iowans in order to promote civility through character development.” Wildwood collaborates with the Institute for Character Development to incorporate Character Counts! into every aspect of programming at the ranch. Our curriculum is rooted in the Six Pillars of Character: Trustworthiness - Respect - Responsibility - Fairness - Caring - Citizenship
The Character Counts! framework is a process of teaching, encouraging, advocating, and modeling that these six universal values are important in all areas of life in a community. For more information on Character Counts! or The Institute of Character Development, please visit their website.
In our 13-15 year old Leader in Training (LiT) Program , we build on the 6 pillars of character with Michael Brandwein’s 12 levels of General Leadership. Michael Brandwein’s leadership curriculum is innovative, intentional and fun. We work with the LiT’s on:
Teamwork - Responsibility - Respect - Motivation - Listening - Planning - Initiative - Creativity
Persistence - Presenting - Problem Solving - Observation
With each skill, we work on Leader Action and Leader Lingo: what a positive leader is doing AND what a positive leader is saying.
In our 16-18 year old Team Leader in Training (TLiT) Program , we build on both the 6 pillars of character and the 12 levels of General Leadership- with the addition of Michael Brandwein’s 12 leadership skills focused specifically on Leading Children. As TLiTs, we work on:
Group Leadership - Game and Activity Leadership - Body Language - Enthusiasm - Communication - Developing Positive Behavior
Managing Undesired Behavior - Teaching - Caring - Teaching Responsibility/ Problem Solving - Working Together - Positive Learning
We practice these skills in a variety of ways- role playing, modeling, small group discussions and journaling.
For more information on Michael Brandwein’s Leadership Curriculum or to learn about his other excellent teachings and training opportunities, please visit his website.
